When you say you're going on a diet, that implies that at some point you'll go off your diet. And going back to old habits will just put the weight back on. You need to change your diet. Make small changes that you can maintain over your lifetime. This will keep the weight off.
And think about it, a diet is what you eat. You can have a healthy diet or an unhealthy diet. It's not something you can turn on or off. It's not like you eat or don't eat. So you can't really go "on" a diet.
So change your mindset. Change your diet, don't go on a diet. Stop thinking of it as a 4 letter word and think of it as your life!
